Its not just the public who are engaged in the scrabble for the best bargains in Woolworth's, the owners of various chain stores are also engaged in the vicious elbow nudging, hoping to snatch up Woolies best and most lucrative locations.
This i can imagine will mean that there is a good Chance that we will be getting a brand spanking new Waitrose on Portobello, whoop-de-sodding-do! If the Edgware road branch that has just opened on the old Woolies site is anything to go by it won't be cheap, as supermarkets go that one is a right rip off and i should know because my own sainted mother told me so, "its a bloody rip off, Ive only been in there once and all the prices were so high i just thought sod it and walked out without buying anything", and who am i to doubt the word of mother?
The chances of Portobello now getting a Waitrose seems quite high judging by the (always factual) news reports and the fact that Waitrose has already inhaled a fair few of the bankrupt chains premises.
And speaking of Woolworth's, i decided to go down to the Portobello Woolies to take a look at the closing down sale for myself and see if it really was as mad as it looked on the news, oh my gosh.
Not only were they fighting over the light bulbs, the queues were massive, long lines of people with arm fulls of crap that Woolies had not been able to get rid of years ago that were now being snatched up just because they were 40p cheaper or had a sign over them saying '10% off', the floor was strewn with torn and broken unsold items, shoppers were aggressively shoving each other out of the way as they made grabs for such every day necessities such as 5in porcelain penguins and pan scrubbers while others prowled the isles hoping to swoop on anything that they might conceivably one day find a use for, the whole scene was like watching carrion fighting and picking at the last bits of a carcass, but more amusing.
