BYE BYE WOOLWORTHS.

It is with genuine sadness that i am writing this, Woolworth's has been with us on Portobello road as long as i can remember, i even remember shopping in there with my parents when i was a toddler. Even now i still find myself shopping in there at least two or three times a month.

But after Christmas that is all going to change what with the shop closing, i don't hold out much hope for them being taken over and kept on as a going concern, more likely the premises are going to be sold off to try and recoup some financial losses, this worries me, i just know that Portobello road is now going to see a brand new horridly large supermarket, the fact that the area doesn't need one and many dont want one will be beside the point.

If a supermarket is built on the Woolworth's premises there could be problems with access for their delivery lorries, not only in the many small surrounding roads, it could also impact on the Portobello stall holders who have always used one side of Portobello road (the Woolworth's side) to store their stock prior to selling it, if a supermarket is built the stall holders could be forced to move their stock to allow the supermarkets large, wide, long delivery vehicles room to move in and out of Portobello, not having fresh stock to hand that could be put on the stalls and sold immediately will impact the stalls ability to trade. This will deliver yet another blow to the traditional market, its traders and that of the many, locals and visitors who still prefer to shop for their fresh food and varied items at market stalls.

Here's hoping Woolworth's get an 11th hour reprieve.
