When I worked in the market on a variety of fruit and veg stalls one of the most often repeated and well known story, or 'Market myth' as I call them, was the late 1960's tale of the charity worker called 'Mr Money' and his down fall after a walk along Portobello road while raising cash for charity, during a very ill conceived publicity plan that put him in danger the moment he left his starting point.
Now I don't know if this tale is a true one or not, and after some of the sarcastic and decidedly dodgy tales I heard while working there I didn't dare ask, mainly for fear of being given a playful, but totally untrue answer for a reply.
The tale is about a man who went around collecting money for charity, and when given it he pinned it to the outside of his suit, the idea being that by the end of his 'quest' he would have a suit so full of pinned on varieties of different denominations of £ notes that it looked like the suit was made of loose notes.
Apparently, Mr Money got as far as Portobello road and, faster than the speed of thought, the word had gotten around that he was about and what he was 'wearing'.
Mr Money visited a few pubs and was given a few bank notes from stall holders and locals before turning off the Portobello and into a relatively quiet side street, he had not long been on this new street when he was jumped and held down while all the bank notes on his suit were torn off, the culprits were then said to have run off back to the market area before disappearing.
A dishevelled Mr Money meanwhile came back to Portobello with his tale of woe, and was so angry his head was steaming. Rather than get the posse he expected to gather and try to trace the guilty thieves, Mr Money was met with comments such as "what did you expect?" along with general disinterest, the general consensus was that he had been a silly boy who got what he should of expected, and without any protection it was inevitable he would of been a crime victim.
I won't say that the stallholders were either deep or spiritual enough type people to see an inevitable Karmic event behind it all, but, then again you don't need to be the Oracle of Delphi to know that he would be mugged.
Of Mr Money himself, he was thought of as "an idiot, after all, what did 'e expect round here?" .
