Portobello road is under threat yet again from the machinations of the RBKC council who are now attempting to let chain stores open up along the street, this has gotten the shop and stall holders who recently saw traders being unfairly evicted to make way for a large store rightly and highly worried, there is now even a Facebook page called 'Save Portobello road' that also has links to other sites all dedicated to the same purpose.
The councils cruel chucking out of all the stall holders from the long established indoor antiques market to make way for a single 'chain store' company has been seen as a sign that as far as the council is concerned, the end is finally nigh for 'that' market.
If the council got their way, they would totally kill off the very reason people want to come here, they think that reinventing this place as some plastic Mickey Mouse world version of what it already is would be a good idea (no doubt they would employ jobbing actors to stroll about dressed as Dick Van Dyke, all singing "chim-chimmery-charoo"). The worry is this place will become just another extension of Oxford street and the west end.
