'VILLAGE' LIFE IN PORTOBELLO

One of my biggest "uurrghh's" is when people call the Portobello area a village, Im restraining my words here now, I want to swear and cuss those who do call it a village but I will content myself with telling them they are idiots.
If ever Notting hill had a village it was down in Notting Barn, more popularly known by the natives as the piggeries. It was in the area on the western side of Notting hill itself that the people used to share their homes with the Pigs in winter for warmth, up until the recent past, that 'village' didnt stretch to the Portobello area.
The area round Portobello road was built later as middle class suburban homes for the then middle class in the late 1880's onward , it was then that the real 'village' met the new houses, joining the village with the  west end.
So when you hear someone refer to this area as a village please ask them if they still sleep with their Pig in winter as the other villagers did/do (who knows what they get upto there?).
