Walking up towards Portobello Road yesterday about 3.30pm along Westbourne Park road towards Portobello Road, I was idly watching the 'needed changing for decades', constant traffic jam that blight's the street, the only real spoiler to this never changing view was/is between the badly parked, road blocking cars, where you can see the huge, mostly (if not totally) empty, three level 'underground' car park that sits opposite the Elgin pub.
But, the people controlling the estate situated above this HUGE unused car park (I'm not joking, we used to cycle round it having races as kids, it is a massive space) say its only for the residents use (yet, they don't use it).
These fools who object to the opening up of that space for residential use should be overridden for obvious reasons. A resident of the estate said to me that the day to day running of the estate is a "done deal" and is controlled by a unpleasant 'clique' who are aghast at any thought of 'change' -white aprons and the odd word Ma-Ha-Bon have been mentioned by Estate residents but I don't have a clue what they are on about).
Parking rights to the car park could easily be extended to include the residents of the houses leading to Portobello road, and it would provide a few locals jobs, looking after the place and making sure it doesn't become a shooting gallery or place to rob cars.
A simple plan I know (I'm full of them), but one not impossible to achieve if the will was there to do it.
Anyway, as I walked nearer to Portobello I noticed the darkness of the street where it should be all lit up, while an Ambulance screamed away impatiently beside me, stuck in the traffic, it's siren almost had my ears off.
when I got to Portobello road I could see the block containing Tesco was suffering an electricity power cut. Tesco, though affected as well was still in business, I could see where their priorities lay when I noticed that unlike anyone else on the block, Tesco were able to keep their electronic tills open, and the lights directly above them, but nothing more, leaving the shop in gloomy darkness. They were obviously drawing forth power from some dark art to keep the tills 'chinging' away (or an emergency generator?). They could of used a slightly bigger generator, without lights I would not have almost scared a woman half to death as I lunged for some cheese before the partitions were pulled down and I was blocked off from the frozen, and chilled foods sections. And yet while the food in these sections warmed up and became unsellable, the tills still chinged, away selling canned and dried goods, Was the loss of all the frozen and chilled foods worth the sale of baked beans and dog food? Odd logic indeed.
Outside, a Policeman ran huffing and puffing from shop to shop finding out if all was fine, he looked like he hadn't done anything like that for some time, to put it politely.
All this happened a short time after we had a terrific rain storm, I wonder, if like the rest of this damp, wet country, this area has also lost the ability to foresee or cope with getting wet? (apart from Tesco's who had the foresight and ability to draw forth dark energies to keep the tills chinging happily away of course).
