It is only the start of October and already Sainsbury's have had Christmas 'decorations' up for three weeks (for decorations, read- 'adverts'), and we haven't gotten round to the ritual burning of the Catholic bogey man on November 5th yet.
Are we now going to expect the sale of chocolate eggs in the shops from January onwards soon?
We all know that the actual significance and reasons behind these holidays or 'events' have slowly been pushed to the sidelines in exchange for the far more 'fun' and hedonistic (profitable) happenings we have been turning them into, but hey, its better than Cromwell banning Christmas isn't it!
I know they want to plant in the minds of shoppers that Sainsburys is going to be the one place to do your shopping in, but all it does for me is remind me of family members sitting round a table with strained faces all pretending to be having the time of their lives as they try to drink themselves into ending the day and getting home, while secretly thinking "why was I sat next to that cockroach? all he has done is..blah blah blah", and "I cannot believe it, I spent a small fortune buying them all presents and all I got back in return was a poxy alarm clock that you can buy in any £pound shop, cheap bastards", and so on.
Then there is of course, "did she get all of her food out of a tin of frozen packet? because it tastes manky".
Sainsburys early Christmas advertising has not made me make a mental note to use their stores to buy any and all shopping I will need over the holiday, it has just heightened any cynical thoughts I had about the store.
Christmas advertising in September. I ask you, is that really necessary? We all knew it is coming anyway without their help.
