"let music be the food of love"
One of the better ideas to improve London's areas has got to be the 'street-piano' idea.
The genius of just leaving a piano in full working order out in the street with an accompanying score for anyone to play along with, if they choose to, or not depending what they want to (or can) play (that was 'score' in the traditional sense of a collection of corresponding musical notations, as opposed to deals of illicit substances such as guns and drugs by the way).
CHOP STICKS
The piano that was set up under the Westway at Portobello road for instance was a great success, pulling a continual crowd of smiling, curious people who watched (or joined in), and who all left with a big happy smile on their faces, proof and justification if ever it was needed, that the piano should of been there, and had a moral right to be so.
The piano also revealed the stunning talent of one of our local 'street gentlemen' (and his Herculean efforts to stay upright at the piano stool while playing) because despite his gaunt physical appearance (and odour, wheeu!) he was able to play that piano as if it were a part of him, it was quite a surprise to all around to hear him playing so well, and a soppy, slow romantic piece as well .
Still being able to play with so much competence obviously pleased the lashhead and his pals no end judging by his huge grin, and the triumphal egging on he was getting from his mates, plus he had the small crowd gathered round him who were also enthusiastically clapping and cheering him on. The piano was a 'happy magnet', everyone who went near it to hear someone playing left just a little bit happier, not just from the joy of hearing a well played piece, but also the amusement that comes from hearing people messing around, and even from just hearing awful sounding attempts, and as no one was taking it seriously, there were no bruised ego's or flared tempers, just mutual fun.
So well done to www.streetpianos.com for a brilliant but fiendishly simple idea.
And a big dirty "yaa-booh!" to the killjoys who remove the piano's on the grounds of "health and safety", despite the innocent enjoyment given all those who had come across them.
