MUTOID I.T.A. RESPEK!
It's hard trying to think of a way to start an article on the Mutoid Waste Co.s. new exhibition without resorting to the usual platitudes of "amazing", "innovative" and "ground-breaking" yet I'm at a loss to describe it without resorting to words to that effect, but I'll try.
Although those who are familiar with the work of previous shows/exhibitions of the Mutoid Waste Co. won't of seen anything new in this latest foray into the Mutoid world, they none the less still couldn't help but be impressed with the latest efforts.
The exhibition space is placed appropriately under the Westway, not far from Mutoids beginnings, and takes up a large space that is broken into halves by two of the mammoth columns that hold the monstrous road way up. Far from being an impediment, the columns afford the numerous different artists involved more space with which to fill with their creations.
Almost every wall space is filled with art of differing styles and themes, art which is at he moment loosely being termed 'street art' (meaning the dealers haven't yet found a way to bottle it, package it and sell it off as next years thing), and despite the differences in styles everything seems to work well together.
The so-called 'Guerrilla' style of the art and it's setting, plus the subject matter of the artworks, that went from the political to the humourous is mostly of top quality, filling the large space with great, original art, and in the far left corner is a smaller room, again full of smaller but just as impressive art works. Combined with the 'free space' attitude that has children running around happily while adults sit around in groups Mutoid have created a happy relaxed place as well as an exhibition of some of the great examples of the work by young artists.
All the while you are looking at the art work on the walls a robot horse snorts and shakes its head as it walks by, this is accompanied by music supplied by the robot D.J. with a light bulb face.
Smaller pieces of work are scattered round the area sitting on small columns, and for those who wish to stay a little longer to soak in the surroundings there is a bar where you can by a Beer or spirit to sit back and sip as you relax in the supplied comfy chairs and sofa's that are dotted about for our pleasure, that's if you don't fancy sitting back against the old R.A.F. helicopter in one 'room' or relaxing by the Mad Max looking jet car in the other.
I urge everyone who can to attend the Mutoid exhibition before it ends the weekend after next because Portobello has been blessed with such a good event.
Opening days are FRI/SAT/SUN till 10pm (9 on Sunday).
P.S. dogs are allowed entry only if tied by a piece of string.
